Many different items can cause pain on the bottom of your feet. They may be directly associated with your foot itself or with your ankle radiating pain into your foot. Foot and ankle injuries are very common.

What are the Parts of an Ankle?

Your two long, lower leg bones and your ankle bone are the components of your ankle joint. You have ligaments to connect the bones to one another and provide stability and support. Your muscles and tendons in the ankle allow the ankle to move. If any of the parts including bones, ligaments, muscles or tendons are injured in any manner, you will feel pain in your ankle and possibly in your foot also.

What are Signs and Symptoms of a Broken Ankle or Broken Foot?

A broken ankle or broken foot involves the bones in that area in which one or more are broken. If it is a severe break in either area, you will most likely need medical help to secure the area with a cast, boot or possibly have surgery to hold the bone in place with screws or other hardware while it heals. The signs and symptoms include an immediate pain that throbs, pain that increases when you stand or move but subsides while you are at rest. You may have bruising and swelling as well as tenderness and experience difficulty in standing or walking when you bear weight on your ankle or foot.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of an Ankle Sprain or Foot Sprain?

A foot sprain or an ankle sprain occurs when ligaments that connect the bones to each other inside of a join are torn. It can exist in three different grades. Grade I is a fairly mild injury in which the ligaments may be stretched or have tiny tears in them. Grade II is when the ligaments are partially torn or severely stretched and Grade III is when the ligaments are completely torn through resulting in a non-weight bearing condition. If you experience foot and ankle injuries and the pain is severe or cannot be controlled with over the counter pain medications, your foot or ankle looks to be distorted, you cannot walk without pain and you have severe pain when you touch the bones on either side of your ankle, then you definitely need to go to a physician. These are signs that your injury can be something more than a sprain and they need to be diagnosed and then addressed.

What is the Cause of Sprains in the Ankle or Foot?

Foot and ankle sprains can be caused by an unnatural movement of the joints. If you participate in sports that require you to plant your foot with great force, such as basketball after a jump shot, it can cause a sprain. Furthermore, sprains can occur just from the simple act of walking over uneven ground or planting your foot with a twisting motion when you get out of bed.
